U.S. Spies Want to Find Terrorists in World of Warcraft

From Wired magazine: http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/2008/02/nations-spies-w.html

Be careful who you frag. Having eliminated all terrorism in the real world, the U.S. intelligence community is working to develop software that will detect violent extremists infiltrating World of Warcraft and other massive multiplayer games, according to a data-mining report from the Director of National Intelligence.
The Reynard project will begin by profiling online gaming behavior, then potentially move on to its ultimate goal of "automatically detecting suspicious behavior and actions in the virtual world."

The publicly available report -- which was mandated by Congress following earlier concerns over data-mining programs -- also mentions several other data-mining initiatives. These include:

  • Video Analysis and Content Extraction - software to automatically identify faces, events and objects in video
  • Tangram - A system that wants to create surveillance and threat warning system that evaluates known threats and finds unknown threats to issue warnings ahead of an attack
  • Knowledge Discovery and Dissemination - This tool is reminiscent of the supposedly-defunct Total Information Awareness program. It seeks to access disparate databases to find patterns of known bad behavior. The program plans to work with domestic law enforcement and Homeland Security.
The report gives no indication why the find-a-terrorist cell in Sims project is called Reynard, though that is a traditional trickster figure in literature.

The cultural and behavioral norms of virtual worlds and gaming are generally unstudied. Therefore, Reynard will seek to identify the emerging social, behavioral and cultural norms in virtual worlds and gaming environments. The project would then apply the lessons learned to determine the feasibility of automatically detecting suspicious behavior and actions in the virtual world. If it shows early promise, this small seedling effort may increase its scope to a full project.
Reynard will conduct unclassified research in a public virtual world environment. The research will use publicly available data and will begin with observational studies to establish baseline normative behaviors.

Roles and Responsibilities

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

All players regardless of role within the guild are members who will adhere to the expectations put forth in the “Expectations of Guild Members”.

All members have access to the Guild Bank and therefore, all members are required to donate usable items to the Guild Bank. Refer to "Guild Bank Rules".

To move from Initiate, to Member, to Veteran to Officer, you must be recommened/sponsored by 3 other guild members.

Initiate

This is the role that any new player is automatically placed in as a trial period. A player will be an initiate until that have quested/raided with the guild on enough runs for us to understand if/where they will fit into our overall guild structure. This role allows the player and guild to ensure we have a common interest. It also enables the Initiate to participate in quests/raids and any loot that is assigned via a /roll distribution to their class.

Member

This role is given to players after they have completed the initiation process but either haven't started group questing/raiding with Pasiphae or don't wish to. This is also the rank that "friends and family members" of long-time Pasiphae members will receive if they wish to play with Pasiphae but don't want to group quest/raid. Member-status players should communicated to Officers or the GM if they wish to sign up a new member.

Veteran

This role is given to long-term Children of Pasiphae members who play occassionally and do not wish the responsilibities of a guild officer. Veterans can be your main or alt, and generally are available to group quest/raid or offer help to other guild members as required. Veterans should communicated to Officers or the GM if they wish to sign up a new member.

Raid Leader/Raiders

Members with this role in the guild handle the execution of the guild raids in an on-time and orderly fashion. This position will hold our guild strategy for an instance and moderate the discussion of instance strategies, set the date of the raids and ensure a full complement of players (10, 25 or 40) are available for the raid.

Officer

A member with this role is to ensure that issues are dealt with in an orderly and amicable manner. Issues can include both conduct and gameplay performance. The officers will bring all parties involved into a discussion and facilitate a resolution. The officer has all resources in their power to resolve this issue. If an issue is not able to be resolved then it will be raised to the GM to help to come to a resolution. The goal of this role is to facilitate a discussion so that the issues can be worked out between the guild members on their own. Officers are also required to bring in new members to the guild with due caution towards whether newbies fit with the guild's modus operandi. The guild will limit itself to 10 Guild Officers per 100 members. If you are currently a guild member and wish to be designated as a member/veteran, pls inform the GM.

Guild Master

The guild can expect the Guild Master to lead the day-to-day operations of guild through providing direction to the guild as needed. The GM is the ultimate arbitrator to guild issues that arise if the problem can not be solved by officers. The GM is in charge of providing new and informative information to the guild's website: http://childrenofpasiphae.blogspot.com/.

EXPECATION OF GUILD MEMBERS:

In order to achieve our goals we strive to build a team with mutual respect and dedication to each other and the group goals. Through teamwork the group will keep progressing through its goals and objectives; for example, members need to be willing to make sacrifices for the greater good of the guild, by ensure their primary skills are leveled up in order to provide services to guildmates and keep the guild bank stocked with usable items, learn about group quests and instances before you start so that progress is efficient, and always lend a hand to other toons in the game to keep the name, Pasiphae on the lips and ears of wannabees. Other expectations that the guild has of its members are as follows:

On-Time

If you schedule a group quest/raid with other guild members, it is necessary that the members be ready for the dungeon/raid 15 minutes prior to the start. Know that some of your guildmates are not as knowledgeable about the game as you, and may not know how to get to the instance portal. Patience and helpfulness is required. Invites will typically begin 30 minutes prior to the dungeon/raid and priority spots will be held until the 15 minute mark. Any spots that aren't filled will go to the next most qualified member.

Considerate

The member is expected to be considerate to other members online. This includes excessive use of profane language in guild chat and on Ventrilo (if you so wish to use). If you wouldn’t say to your family then it’s not fit for guild chat, the forums, or Vent. If a member feels that another member is not considerate please start by talking to the other member directly. If that does not work then please bring it up to an officer for resolution to the issue.

Helpful

Remember that everyone in the guild is here to have fun. Some members are more interested in questing, some more interested in dungeons, battlegrounds, arena or raiding end game content. If you can answer a question in guild chat or on Vent please do so, it makes the guild a friendlier environment.
If you get a piece of gear that might be useful for someone in the guild please ask the guild first before selling it in the auction house. The member with the item has the right to be fairly compensated for it. It would be recommended at some discount for the guild member off the market value of the item.

USING THE GUILD BANK

All members, regardless of level, have access to the guild bank. The guild bank exists for you and to help you aquire a piece of armour, weapon, potion, materials etc. Do not be greedy or excessive. Rules have been set that do not allow more than five transactions per day within the guild bank. If you are low on gold currency, the guild bank does not exist for you to take items out and auction them or sell them to a trader. Equally, be reasonable using Guild Bank gold for item repairs.

Note: We are currently saving the Guild Bank gold to purchase a 2nd tab (250g).

Items required for the guild bank are: Armour kits of all kinds, Scrolls, Potions, Elixirs, Flasks, Quest Items, Items for Reputation*, Bandages, Raw Materials, Armour and Weapons in that order. *ie. if you are aligned with Aldor and pick up Scryer tomes or Sunwing signets, place them in the AH for those aligned to Scryers, and vice versa.

Always check the Guild Bank before you start your WOW day.

If you have placed an item in the Guild Bank that other members may be interested in, shout out a guild message when you are online. If you are looking for something particular, do the same.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact your GM.
